Warli Art
Craft Guide

Warli Art.

Warli is a tribal painting tradition associated with Warli communities of coastal and northern Maharashtra, especially the Palghar–Dahanu–Talasari belt. Traditionally painted on earthen walls for rituals, marriages and seasonal ceremonies, the visual language uses highly economical geometry: circles for celestial forms, triangles for bodies and mountains, and squares for sacred enclosures. Human and animal figures are built from paired triangles and arranged in scenes of farming, hunting, dancing, village life and the tarpa dance. Contemporary artists often work on paper and canvas while retaining the characteristic white-on-earth palette. For a marketplace, authentic Warli should be presented as a living narrative system rather than a decorative pattern: document the artist’s community, subject, pigments, surface, scale and whether the composition is ritual, narrative or contemporary.
