Pichhwai / Nathdwara Devotional Painting
Craft Guide

Pichhwai / Nathdwara Devotional Painting.

Pichhwai is a devotional painting tradition associated with the worship of Shrinathji at Nathdwara in Rajasthan. The word refers to the painted textile or backdrop placed behind the deity, and traditional compositions correspond to festivals, seasons and episodes from Krishna’s life. Cows, lotuses, peacocks, monsoon landscapes, temple architecture and highly stylised depictions of Shrinathji are recurring elements. Historically, works were produced on cloth with natural and mineral pigments and often incorporated gold; contemporary artists also work on paper and canvas and create smaller formats for collectors. On a marketplace, Pichhwai should be distinguished from generic Rajasthani miniature painting. Listings should identify whether the work is temple-format, festival-specific or contemporary, note the artist’s Nathdwara lineage when relevant, and document pigment, surface, gold work, dimensions and iconography.
