Rajasthani Miniature Painting
Craft Guide

Rajasthani Miniature Painting.

Rajasthani miniature painting is a broad family of court and devotional painting traditions that developed across kingdoms such as Mewar, Jaipur, Bundi, Kota, Kishangarh and Nathdwara. Works are characterised by fine brushwork, carefully drawn figures, layered architecture and landscapes, mineral or plant-derived pigments, and frequent use of gold. Themes range from Krishna and Radha, Ragamala and royal processions to court life, flora, fauna and literary narratives. Different schools have distinct palettes, facial types, compositions and iconography, so the website should avoid presenting 'miniature painting' as a single undifferentiated style. Each listing should identify the school or influence where known, the surface, pigment system, use of gold or precious materials, size, subject and whether the work follows a traditional composition or is an original contemporary interpretation.
