Palm-Leaf Engraving & Pattachitra
Craft Guide

Palm-Leaf Engraving & Pattachitra.

Odisha palm-leaf art, often grouped with Pattachitra, is created by joining strips of dried palm leaf and incising images and text with a sharp stylus. Pigment or lampblack may be rubbed into the engraved lines to increase contrast. Some works are monochrome line engravings, while others open as folded manuscripts or combine engraving with colour. Subjects include episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Krishna traditions, Jagannath iconography, astrology and intricate decorative geometry. The form preserves the visual character of manuscript traditions and rewards close viewing because complex scenes can be built through extremely fine linear detail. Website records should specify whether the work is engraved, painted, folding or manuscript-format; list the number of leaf panels, dimensions when open and closed, subject, colour treatment, and whether the work is part of the Pattachitra lineage.
