Odisha Pattachitra
Craft Guide

Odisha Pattachitra.

Odisha Pattachitra is a disciplined narrative painting tradition closely connected with the Jagannath cult and temple culture of Puri. The name combines 'patta' (prepared cloth) and 'chitra' (picture). Artisans traditionally prepare a cloth surface with chalk and natural adhesive, polish it smooth, draw strong outlines and build flat areas of colour before finishing with dense ornamental borders. Themes include Jagannath, Krishna Leela, Dashavatara, Ramayana, Devi traditions and elaborate mythological narratives. The same visual vocabulary also appears in palm-leaf engraving and painted wooden objects. Works are valued for controlled line, decorative rhythm, saturated colour and narrative density. For online cataloguing, record the precise subtype—cloth Pattachitra, palm-leaf work or related painted object—along with village, artist lineage, natural/modern pigments, subject, dimensions and whether the composition follows a canonical temple narrative.
