Mysore Traditional Painting
Craft Guide

Mysore Traditional Painting.

Mysore painting is a classical South Indian tradition associated with the courts and temples of Karnataka. It is recognised for graceful drawing, relatively restrained compositions and delicate gold work that differs from the heavier relief associated with many Thanjavur paintings. The subject is usually devotional—Krishna, Rama, Devi, Ganesha and scenes from Hindu mythology—although courtly themes also occur. A prepared paper or cloth ground may be mounted on board, with selected ornaments and architectural details raised using a gesso-like paste before gold leaf is applied. Fine line drawing and controlled colour complete the work. For website cataloguing, identify whether the artist follows the traditional Mysore method, the ground and board used, type of relief and gold, pigment medium, subject, dimensions, date and artisan lineage. This helps distinguish authentic work from generic gold devotional painting.
